UMOJA
Last night Ryan, Shane, Eeva and myself went to see Africa UMOJA - The Spirit of Togetherness at the Vogue Theatre in downtown Vancouver. UMOJA is a musical highlighting the history of the South African people. The musical goes through many stories such as traditional Zulu ceremonies, the deprivation of the apartheid and modern day South Africa. The show illustrates how the tribal peoples of South Africa always turned to music to get them through any situation.
I was born in Durban, South Africa and have many treasured memories of my childhood there. My parents opposed the apartheid regime and as a result we left in 1985. In some respects I am grateful as I had already been exposed to apartheid attitudes at my kindergarten and my innocent mind didn’t understand the concept.
I am an African at heart and my experience of the show was absolutely amazing; the drummers, dancers and singers where exuding extraordinary talent.
